Closed caption translation tool in Zoom for convention

SGGEE has added a new tool to its Zoom account, which uses subtitles to display translation of discussion and presentations (spoken words only).

 If you find it easier to follow along using "closed captions" -- subtitles -- or if you want to view the AI translation, we've put together an instruction sheet.

Please review the instructions prior to the convention if you want to give it a try. We will step through this quickly on the opening day.

The long, slow road through Poland to Volhynia

We might think that our German ancestors moved directly to Volhynia, sometimes with a stop for a generation in Poland, sometimes not. The truth can be more complicated, because in some cases, there were multiple moves. It gets more complicated when we consider the paths taken by the siblings of our ancestors.

Thanks to DNA matches, it is possible to track our families like never before. Beyond that, what happened to our family members in Volhynia? There were many options to be considered as we do our research.

Dave Obee has been researching his family history for more than 40 years and has made several trips to Europe to learn more about his mother's Volhynian ancestry.

A journalist by day, Dave has an honorary doctorate from the University of Victoria, where he is also the honorary archivist and librarian. He was on the advisory board for Library and Archives Canada for several years.

Dave was a founding member of SGGEE and spoke at the first conference in Calgary in 1998. Much of what he said then would not be worth mentioning in a presentation today, with one notable exception: Work every source you can, because you never know which one will have the information you need.
